Dishing on Free Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Lawn Tickets August 15th

The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra is offering 4,000 free lawn tickets at the Verizon Wireless Ampitheatre at Encore Park for a concert on Aug. 15 that will close the 2009 Classical season and conclude with celebratory fireworks.

This ASO program features 16-year-old guest conductor Ilyich Rivas in his U.S. professional debut. The audience is encouraged to send questions via text message, which the young conductor will then answer in a live, on-site broadcast.

The event will also feature a pre-concert “Top of the Lawn” event, which will include a conversation with ASO insider Ken Meltzer and musician Juan Ramirez.

If you don't know about MagicJack ... well, it is a newer, hipper Internet Phone service than the traditional VOIP we have been accustomed to trying to do business with. And starting on June 15, 2009, they are shipping free MagicJacks to the first 10,000 people who sign up.

How does it work?

Here's how the whole thing works: The jack's magic is in an oversized thumb-drive that connects to the USB port of a computer. At magicJack's other end is a standard phone jack attached to a conventional handset. The device loads its own software, and in a couple of minutes users can be making and receiving calls with their old corded or cordless phone. MagicJack customers must keep their computer powered up to make and receive calls. But piggybacking on the PC (including Macs with Intel chips) helps keep costs down.

If you have never tried Bugaboo Steakhouse, you really should. Bugaboo serves steaks, seafood and chicken. Albeit, the chicken is usually the chicken finger version of chicken. But they are not promoting chicken -- they are promoting good ol' steaks.

I have been a big fan of Bugaboo but they closed their shop near North Point Mall. So, I have to drive an extra 4 miles to their Duluth location, which is not too bad of a haul.

I can go to CEC for less than $20 usually and that includes drinks, food and 100+ tokens.

Keep in mind my kids eat like birds and I am the pig of the family. And even with me being the pig we still do fine.

10 cents a token ... use the attached coupon to purchase 40 Tokens and get 60 Free. This expires 06/05/2009.

If you have decent grades you can get up to 15 tokens free per report card.

Buy Hi-C ten pack and on specially marked packages you can get 10 tokens free. (upto 3 may be used at one time)

Fill out one of their rewards calendars and receive 10 free tokens per child. (limit 1 Rewards Calendar per child per visit)

So for $10, you may purchase 100 tokens, receive 10 for rewards and 15 for good grades. Include the 30 free from Hi-C and you have 100 + 20 for Rewards, + 30 for Hi-C and that is 150 tokens for $10. And I didn't even include the good grades rewards another potential of +30 tokens. However, that can be used only once with each report card.

Then I purchase a small or medium pizza and a drink to share.

As many of you know, I just LOVE Chick-fil-a... always have. I should have tried to work there when I was a teenager instead of a now defunct burger place. But they were great, too. They were one of the first to serve wheat bread, lean ground beef and offered a full salad bar. I think they were called Delights. I can't recall -- I remember having to wear khaki pants, preppy suede shoes and a white polo.

I remember they had me making the burgers and helping with the orders ocassionally. Then they realized, I was pretty good at the register and made me the head cashier for drive thru orders. And they didn't have all the fancy registers that they had these days and I had to do a lot of the change in my head. Those were the days!

I digress....

I wanted to talk about Cow Appreciation Day, July 11. Chick fil a celebrates Cows and if you dress up like a cow on July 11 - you can get a meal on that day. I have donned on the Cow outfit for my kids and CFA for the past 2 years and we love it. Usually, the restuarant we go to will also offer a plush cow or a coupon for a brownie or an ice dream. And it is a free meal!! Who can beat that!?

Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive - National - Saturday, May 9th

Post Office asks postal customers "to help the hungry" and donate to the annual National Association of Letter Carriers Food Drive across America on Saturday May 9th. All the food collected goes to local community food banks which provide meals for the needy throughout the year.

Postal customers wishing to donate food items should put them in a plastic bag and leave the bag of food items by your mailbox, before mail delivery on Saturday, May 9.

Food items should be non-perishable such as dried, canned and packaged products. Items most needed by food banks are canned meats, soup, fruits and vegetables; and packaged non-perishables with lots of protein/carbohydrates such as pasta, cereal, powdered milk and vegetables. Every 1.3 pounds of food donated equates to one meal according to food bank officials.

Many more people are hungry and struggling to feed their families. The food drive is a great opportunity for us all to give something so important to those who most need it.

Jonas Brothers are in town again -- this time they are headlining at Philips Arena.

I went last year with Sydney and one of her best friends. It was a very good concert -- a bit hot and very late. This year it should be better since the location is indoors and the concert does not need to wait until it is dark before it starts.

If you carry a Citi card you also can enter your card number for the presale tickets as well as if you are a Fan Club member, there are exclusive codes one can enter for Presale codes. But if you don't have either -- you can at least get the presale tickets using ATLANTA on Friday, March 27th at 10 AM.

This is a little out of my way but some of deals are worth the trip. I also find that the me driving over to Duluth for some of my errands and then filling up on gas is actually worth it. Last week, I was pumping gas at 1.95 for Premium (1.65 for Regular) and it was 2.18 in Alpharetta (1.88 for Regular) so, the savings was worth it. Got the cheap gas, got cheap food on the go, and got cheaper stuff in Gwinnett. Sometimes, I think they charge more for people living in Alpharetta/Johns Creek because of the perception that we are all rich over here. Unfortunately, I am one of those people bringing down the average.

Metro Atlanta’s 20 Steak ’n Shake restaurants will roll back prices on steakburgers to 15 cents on Friday to celebrate the chain’s 75th anniversary.

On Feb. 13 from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., individual steakburgers are 15 cents, the same price the burgers were when the chain started in Normal, Ill., in 1934. And after 11, the price will rise to only 75 cent and stay that way until March 29.

Also, the first 75 customers at each store at 8 a.m. will get a VIP card that will be good for a free combo meal every month for a year.

The Dish on being Frugal

I have always been frugal even when the economy wasn't so rough and tough. So, here are a few of the things I do at home that save me money and time. I will continue to write and post these tips and tricks periodically. Feel free to send me tips and tricks you have and I will be happy to share with everyone on this blog.

Laundry:
- If you use Dryer Sheets -- cut them in 1/2 and it still works just as well. If you a load of towels or linens -- just cut the sheets in 1/2 and throw 2 of the halves in and it actually works better because the sheets are not attached to one towel the entire cycle.

- If you use Liquid Softener -- spray a handtowel with the softener and and throw it in with the wash. Not only does it work just as well but you use much less than a capful. If you don't trust that then just use 1/2 of a capful and see how that works for you. Like using only 1/2 of the dryer sheet, you really only need 1/2 of the manufacturer's suggested amount of Softner.

Glass/Windows:
- Instead of using a brand like Windex or Fantastik, use windshield wiper solution. It is the same solution but for fraction of the cost.

- Make your own! Fill up a spray bottle 90% full, put a few drops of bleach and a few drops of dishwashing liquid -- shake it up and spray. It works wonders and cleans beautifully.

- Mix a solution of white vinegar and water and spray on your stove tops and/or your oven and grease will wipe right off.

- Create your own window cleaning solution by combining 1/2 cup non-sudsy ammonia, 1 cup white distilled vinegar, and 2 tablespoons cornstarch in a gallon of water.

Dishing on Target Clearance - an extra 30%

Yes... get an extra 30% off of clothing and shoes. They are trying to make room for new merchandise and their winter merchandise has been sitting lately. So, with that said, they have added an additional 30% off of whatever the current mark downs are.

So, if you have a dress that was originally $24.99, clearanced for 50% -- which is now, $12.49. But take it the register and they will manually key in an additional 30% off of that which now makes it, $8.74. So, ostensibly you saved 65% off of the original price. The real bonus is getting a clearance item for 75% off and getting the additional 30% which will make your savings actually, 82.5%.

Many people want to take the 50% and add the 30% and make it 80% but it is the 50% off of the original and then take an additional off of the clearanced price which will be in between 80% and 50%.

Either way, great deals on kids shoes and kids clothes. I was able to walk out the store with dress shoes for $2.82, tennis shoes for $3.00 and a beautifully lined party dress for $8.74. I could not complain and perfect for my daughter's father/daughter dance.

Dell.com is offering a 2 day sale which is actually pretty good. They have their 1510 Vostros Laptop for $489 and their 220 Vostros Slim Tower for $429 which includes the 22" Monitor. Not a bad deal. Additionally, Dell's 1100 laser printer is $69 which is similar, if not the same, as the HP1100 printer that they offered a few years back. One of my all time favorite small but capable printers.

Laser printers are the most economical and the most practical. However, there are days, when I want to print a nice picture of my family for them to post on their bulletin board or for me to send out with a card or a note -- I do like the inkjet photo printer, too.
